Interdependence is a concept where two functions each depend on each other to do their separate roles in order for them to do their roles.

For example,

  • in order to perform its strategic role of producing products for the business, operations depends upon another key business function to do its job AND
  • in order for the other key business function to perform its strategic role, that other key business function depends upon operations to do its job.

eg The operations of a business will require the help of finance to ensure an expansion is successful. Finance will need to provide funds to pay staff, new equipment. Finance also relies on operations to have quality products and a god store layout so that more sales can be made.
